Tiny Houses: From Permits To Code Requirements, What Builders Need To Know

Tiny houses have been pointed to as a solution for lack of affordable housing, a way to promote non-traditional home ownership and a possible solution to housing the homeless. This course is designed for those interested in tiny houses and will explore their design, construction and legal use.

We will summarize the origins and evolution of the tiny house movement and explore case studies. The course will define tiny houses and discuss the several types of state or local government approvals that may be required. Tiny house villages that have been developed will be examined; successes and pitfalls will be discussed.

In addition, the course will address recent legislation that removes some of the impediments to building a small secondary unit on a property. It will also cover California Building Code requirements for tiny homes.

Zero Net Energy: Getting There Through Code

This course is designed for those interested in Zero Net Energy (ZNE) Buildings. As California moves towards ZNE by 2020 for residential structures, and 2030 for non-residential buildings, we will discuss the process and hurdles to making ZNE the standard for the state.

The course will examine ZNE from a code perspective and examine strategies to achieve ZNE in new and existing buildings. We will discuss what it means to be Zero Net Energy and how definitions of ZNE vary.

Some local jurisdictions are adopting ZNE early. This course will cover how code-required ZNE differs from other structures considered to be ZNE. Occupant behavior and its effect on ZNE will be addressed.
