Conference Strands
Visible Learning Inside
Cognitive psychologist Greg Yates joined forces with John Hattie to build on the original data and legacy of the Visible Learning project, showing how it’s underlying ideas and the cutting edge of cognitive science can form a powerful and complimentary framework for shaping learning in the classroom and beyond. Greg will present the major principles of learning and how the research in the human learning processes can inform our teaching and what goes on in our schools. Explicit ties to the components and elements within the domains of the Framework for Teaching will provide insight and strategies for advancing teacher effectiveness.

Author of The Common Core Mathematics Standards: Transforming Practice Through Team Leadership Ted Hull as well as PIMSER Regional Teacher Partners will present two days of sessions that will take your classroom/school/district to the next level of implementation of CCSS in Mathematics.

This strand is designed to move you from standards to classroom implementation and assessment.  Author Page Keeley, along with local practitioners and PIMSER staff, will present a range of sessions exploring the NGSS practices, engineering, and assessment implications.

Kentucky partnered with international assessment expert Shirley Clarke to facilitate two Action Research teams. Team members will share practical classroom-level applications of the formative assessment process showcased in this project. Learn powerful and proven strategies and the incredible impact it had on student learning. Explicit ties to the components and elements within the domains of the Framework for Teaching will be made. 

Laurie Henry, interim Department Chair of Curriculum and Instruction at UK and nationally recognized expert on the new literacies, and PIMSER Regional Teacher Partners will present a strand focused on literacy strategies for all content areas. Emphasis will be on utilizing a range of technologies and practical strategies to help students access complex informational texts.

Social Studies
Kathy Swan, a UK professor and director of the National Social Studies Standards Project, will present a strand focused on social studies.  She was the lead writer of the College, Career and Civic Life (C3) Framework that is being used as the basis for the updated Social Studies Standards.  The sessions will give you the strategies you need to begin building the infrastructure for successful implementation when the Standards are released, while improving your Social Studies program now.
