Conference 2025

As people of hope and courage committed to the well-being of our country, the Friends Conference on Religion & Psychology will convene its 83rd gathering over Memorial Day weekend with a focus on engaging with the world from the Light of the Sacred Self during challenging times. Ours is an annual conference that began in the shadow of World War II, with Quakers seeking the enlightened counsel of psychiatrist Carl Jung and his wife, Emma, as to how modern individuals can use psychology to heal inner wounds and be more skillful peacemakers.
And so, we will once again gather on the tranquil 24-acre Pendle Hill campus, a wooded retreat and study center in Wallingford, PA. We invite you to join us from Friday May 23rd to Sunday May 25th, and become part of our community.
If you are a past attendee of FCRP, you know that our weekend has traditionally begun on Friday afternoon and ended after lunch on Memorial Day. We want you to note that this year the conference will draw to a close on Sunday afternoon. Shifting from a four-day retreat to a three-day one was not an easy decision for us.  Our experiment with this format is to make the gathering less expensive to create, and more affordable for you. In addition to saving you money, you will be able to celebrate Memorial Day somewhere pleasant with family and friends.

Our Speaker, Tom Holmes
In 2025, we are asking: How might we stay centered in the Self in times of turmoil when life goes haywire around us? Our guide is a master psychologist and deeply spiritual man, psychologist Tom Holmes, Ph.D.
Imagine a retreat where your heart feels open, and you sense the warmth of divine love flowing through you. That’s what attendees of our 2024 Friends Conference on Religion & Psychology shared after their experience with Tom.  Among those offering these reactions were psychotherapists, who described peak moments of clarity, renewal, and connection under Tom’s guidance—
and urged us to invite him back.
Their enthusiasm wasn’t solely about Tom’s impressive credentials, though he certainly has them. He’s a former university professor who has trained graduate students in modalities of psychotherapy since 1985, and a pioneer in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, and a counselor who supports healthcare workers in global crisis zones.
While attendees were glad for this expertise, what resonated most was his openness, kindness, and authenticity. In Pendle Hill’s welcoming environment, participants experienced a deep sense of clarity and connection, both with themselves and with others.
Tom’s work with the IFS model helps individuals and professionals alike. In fact, because it can be challenging to find IFS training, therapists, social workers, and counselors who attended the 2024 conference appreciated the opportunity to learn from an experienced practitioner.
Tom is also the author of the widely acclaimed "Parts Work: An Illustrated Guide to Your Inner Life", a beautifully illustrated and practical guide to understanding and transforming inner dynamics. With over 100,000 copies sold, the book has become a cornerstone for those exploring IFS. Tom has a PhD in Counseling Psychology and is a Professor Emeritus at Western Michigan University. He studied with IFS founder Richard Schwartz and has been using IFS in private practice more than 40 years.
His website is www.wingedheart.org.

A Note on the 2025 Conference Structure
If you have registered with FCRP before, you know that selecting an interest group was part of the process and the gatherings have been an engaging element of our weekend. This year we are trying something new – interest groups that we will form during the conference plenaries to help us explore our inner parts under the guidance of Dr. Tom Holmes.  Tom will offer prompts for experiencing the ideas he presents. Then group members will adjourn to private spaces to explore his exercises. This will include helping us identify a symbol of our Sacred Self and show us how to center there during life’s difficulties. He’ll also help us uncover and release the burdens carried by parts of our psyche that feel stuck in distressful emotions. For a preliminary conference schedule, click here.
