Workshop 1: Watercolor Field Studies

The Colors of Cordova

August 4—5, 2018

Watercolor Field Studies: The Colors of Cordova

We shall delve deeply into the language of color, working systematically and intuitively, creating beautiful color studies, and recording observations of Cordova’s unique color palettes along the way. Our experiments will focus on the sea, sky, forest, and town palettes, using each habitat to deepen your awareness of color interactions, what colors you are moved by, and how to get the colors you seek down on paper. We will consider color theory, pigment properties, types of paints, brushes, & supports, proper care of materials, and how to make use of this powerful knowledge in your future projects. No experience needed to enjoy this course!

Your color studies will be the perfect prep for the following weekend’s Watercolor Intensive, and will nestle nicely into the folio you'll create during that workshop, if you attend.

Workshop Fee: $225 includes lunches and materials kit including paint and paper  if registered and paid by June 1.  (A few  items will be needed to be brought to class. List available prior to class)
$250  after June 1.

Workshop 2:

Wild Watercolors Intensive

Friday August 10—Sunday August 12, 2018

Water plus pigment generates powerful alchemy for revealing nature's beauty and complexity. And, what better place than Cordova for combining water with deep observation of the wild beauty surrounding us! During our intensive, Andie will share clear in-depth instruction on the technologies and magical properties of watercolor. On gentle forays outdoors, we’ll collect materials and ideas. Back in the studio, we will experiment with drawing and painting techniques using watercolor, gouache, ink, and pencil. Sequential studies, inspired by late summer subjects such as changing foliage, fading flowers, wild berries, lichen, and fungi, will demystify the watercolor process.

In this class we shall cover fundamentals such as paper choice and prep; types of paints, brushes, & supports; proper care of materials; effects of gum Arabic and ox gall; wet into wet & glazing techniques; painting in layers; plus binding, framing, & other finishing options for your work. We’ll also consider the internal and external aspects of wildness, what wilderness looks and feels like to us, why we value wildness, and how our creative work has the power to connect us deeply to what is wild within, to the wilds surrounding us, to each other, and why this matters. You will create a unique collection of paintings, that will be sequenced and assembled within a beautiful hand-made folio, providing future reference and inspiration to empower your painting vision. Color mixing understanding, such as provided during the previous weekend’s workshop, is helpful, though not required.

For all experience levels. Color mixing understanding, as taught during the previous weekend’s workshop, is recommended.
