Elementary Science Assessment: Supporting Sensemaking and KSA Readiness
Support sensemaking, strengthen assessment practice, and build confidence preparing students for the KSA—without abandoning high-quality science instruction. Teachers often worry that HQIRs don’t provide enough practice with the multiple-choice formats students encounter on the KSA. In this two-part series, we’ll examine how short clusters and stand-alone KSA items connect directly to the science thinking students do in OpenSciEd and Amplify Science—even when MC questions aren’t front-and-center in the curriculum.
Participants will learn how to:
Identify natural points within HQIR lessons for quick MC checks and exit slips
Use AI thoughtfully to generate two-dimensional multiple-choice questions tied to unit learning goals to supplement the existing assessments in the lessons
Field-test questions with students between sessions
Analyze student responses to determine what students know, what they’re confused about, and how to respond instructionally
Teachers will return for Session 2 with student work and assessment data to collaboratively examine results and refine next instructional steps—building confidence in both assessment design and instructional decision-making.
Please note that participants will want to have access to a paid version of an AI platform like ChatGpt, Pilot, or Gemini to be able to upload materials to ensure best results in writing multiple-choice questions. The free versions have such tight data limits daily it may be hard to complete the assessment work with a free account.
