       Introduction to Lace Knitting

CLASS FULL: SIGN UP FOR WAITLIST

    Date: Saturday, June 23, 2018
Time: 09:00 am to 01:00 pm AKDT

    Cost: $ 75.00

Using the new Buttercup Lace Shawl pattern designed for FisherFolk, students may work a small sample or start a full-size shawl. This bottom-up, reversible garter stitch triangle is a lacy version of the basic shawls women and girls wore up and down the north Atlantic coast before coats became the norm. The flower motif repeats over 10 stitches and 10 rows, making it easy to memorize and a great beginning lace project. Students will learn how to splice yarn, read charts and the lace on their needles, as well as how to work an elastic cast off that allows the top edge to elongate for a small scarf or cozy shawl.

    Required Materials

Yarn and needles: For small sample size, 50 yds (50 m) of fingering or Shetland/sport/DK weight yarn in medium or light color. Knitting needles in size appropriate for yarn (generally a needle one two sizes larger than usually used for a yarn will work)

    For full size shawl:

Lace Yarn: 450 yds (410 m) or more and US 3 (3.25 mm) needles*

Fingering Yarn: 500 yds (457 m) or more and US 5 (3.75 mm) needles*

    Shetland/Sport DK Yarn: 575 yds (526 m) and US 7 (4.5 mm) needles*

*Needle size will depend on your yarn’s characteristics and your knitting style. Knit a small swatch in plain garter stitch to determine best size. Sample shawl was knit with a 100 g skein of Brooklyn Tweed Vale lace yarn using US 3 (3.25 mm) needles.  Sample above is Extra FIne Merino Lace Cordova Rainy Day Buttercups from Three Irish Girls.

Other Supplies: coilless safety pin or split ring marker, and usual knitting supplies.

During the late 19th century, Icelanders started knitting interesting lace wristwarmers, shawls, and scarfs. In this class, the unique characteristics of that lace will be discussed, and students can knit a small sample based on an old scarf design. That design has been updated with narrow borders, wide triangle shaping, and an easy-to-memorize lace repeat that ends with a scalloped edging that is cast off with crocheted chains. The instructions later can be used to create a full-size scarf or small shawl in a variety of yarns. Garter-stitch tab beginnings, splicing color changes, wide triangle shaping, chart reading, beading stitches, and the crocheted chain cast-off will be demonstrated in the class.

Spend the day with "Dutch Ganseys" author as you learn to develop your own motifs. You will be spending time charting and plenty of time knitting and testing your ideas.

If you are planning to take the Gansey Design with Beth Reinsel on Tuesday may bring their circular swatch and test designs on swatch to be used the following day.

If you have read the Cordova Gansey Project Long Story, this is the course that also served as an inspiration for the project.  The Dutch ganseys were an interpretation that took patterns from England and Scotland and modified them to make them personal for them.  This workshop focuses on creating motifs that hold value to those knitting and those being knitted for.

It is a rare experience to spend time with Stella in the United States. She is enthusiastic and passionate about her project and you will find the day spent in her company, and in the collective company of other knitters on the similar gansey paths,  to be an inspiring and enjoyable experience.
